At sea
Around 40 percent of the overall 92.5 million tonnes of fish capture production registered in 2017 worldwide was obtained on unpowered vessels less than 12 m in length, while the largest vessels of 24 m and above made up only about 2 percent of the total fleet. Those stand for the second homes of many millions of people around the world who find a source of income and livelihood in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The same year, there were about 40.4 million people engaged in the primary sector of capture fisheries and another 19.3 million in aquaculture. That is to say, approximately 0,5% of the world population at that time spend four months at sea and four months at home on a regular basis, setting aside their personal lives for half their lifetime.
