According to the United Nations, there were about 68,5 million displaced people around the world in 2018, 25.4 million of whom were considered to have refugee status, that is to say they were forced to cross national borders without the possibility to return home safely. Of the rest, 40 million were internally displaced, while 3.1 million were considered asylum seekers. With 3.5 million displaced people within its borders, Turkey is actually considered the top hosting country worldwide.
